The platform determines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>who may submit;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>who may review;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which articles are accepted;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how much authors or readers must pay;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether earlier versions remain available;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and how publication records are maintained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Web3 publishing system can distribute these functions among several interoperable components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Decentralized storage<\/strong> preserves manuscripts, datasets, code, and supplementary files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content-addressed identifiers<\/strong> verify that a file has not been silently altered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blockchain attestations<\/strong> establish timestamps, authorship claims, reviews, and version histories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Smart contracts<\/strong> automate rewards, publication fees, grants, or governance decisions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open peer-review systems<\/strong> make scientific criticism visible and reusable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decentralized identities and reputation systems<\/strong> help researchers carry their records between platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DAOs<\/strong> allow communities to govern publishing and funding infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This model is closely associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/science-dao.org\/ru\/what-is-decentralized-science-desci-%F0%9F%A7%AC%E2%9B%93%EF%B8%8F\/\">decentralized science, or DeSci<\/a>, a movement that uses decentralized technologies to improve scientific funding, collaboration, publication, and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Open_Access_Needs_More_Than_Free_PDFs\"><\/span>Why Open Access Needs More Than Free PDFs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open access is often defined as the ability to read a paper without paying. That is important, but genuine scientific openness requires more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A publication should ideally include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the manuscript;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>underlying data;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>analysis code;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experimental protocols;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>figures and supplementary materials;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preregistration records;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>peer reviews;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>corrections;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>links between different versions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and machine-readable metadata.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A PDF uploaded to a personal website may be freely accessible today but disappear when the website closes. A repository may preserve the paper but not its data. A journal may publish the final result while hiding rejected versions and reviewer reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Web3 infrastructure attempts to treat a scientific publication as a <strong>verifiable research object<\/strong>, rather than merely a static document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_IPFS_Content-Addressed_Storage_for_Research\"><\/span>1. IPFS: Content-Addressed Storage for Research<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ipfs.tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">InterPlanetary File System<\/a> is one of the foundational tools used in decentralized publishing. IPFS retrieves content according to a cryptographic identifier derived from that content, rather than relying solely on the location of a conventional web server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conventional URL effectively says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retrieve whatever file is currently stored at this location.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An IPFS content identifier instead says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retrieve the file whose cryptographic content matches this identifier.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the file changes, its identifier changes. This makes silent replacement easier to detect and allows scientific records to be referenced by content rather than by a potentially unstable server location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IPFS can be used to store or distribute:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>preprints;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>datasets;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>software;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>laboratory protocols;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>peer-review reports;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>supplementary material;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and complete research packages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research has described IPFS as an open-source, content-addressed peer-to-peer system for decentralized data storage and delivery. However, decentralization does not mean that every uploaded file is automatically preserved forever. Files still require active hosting or \u201cpinning,\u201d often supplemented by persistent storage services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_IPFS_solves\"><\/span>What IPFS solves<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IPFS can improve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>resistance to link rot;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>detection of modified files;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>distribution across multiple hosts;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>independence from a single publisher;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and reproducible citation of exact file versions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_IPFS_does_not_solve\"><\/span>What IPFS does not solve<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IPFS does not independently establish:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>whether a paper is scientifically correct;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the claimed author created it;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether ethical requirements were followed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the metadata is accurate;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or whether the content will remain available without persistent hosting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is therefore a storage and verification layer\u2014not a complete scientific publishing system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Filecoin_and_Persistent_Decentralized_Storage\"><\/span>2.
