Results and intellectual property are managed<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two major approaches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Open-public-good model:<\/strong> Results, software and data are released openly. Funding is treated as a grant or donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Commercialization model:<\/strong> The community funds potentially valuable research and receives contractual rights connected to patents, licenses, research data or resulting companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Molecule\u2019s IP-NFT model, for example, connects a blockchain token with legal agreements governing research intellectual property. Related IP tokens can give communities limited governance or access rights, depending on the underlying contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VitaDAO illustrates the second model: it is a community-oriented organization focused on funding early-stage longevity research and has used structures designed to manage or commercialize research-related IP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Simplified_example\"><\/span>Simplified example<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose a scientist requests <strong>$80,000<\/strong> to test a new diagnostic method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experts review whether the proposal is scientifically credible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The proposal is published to a research DAO.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two hundred community members contribute $20,000 collectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A philanthropic matching pool supplies another $60,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The money is placed in a controlled treasury.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The scientist receives $25,000 to begin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later payments require publication of protocols and milestone reports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Final data are released openly\u2014or IP rights are managed according to a contract established before funding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advantages\"><\/span>Advantages<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeSci funding can provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>access for researchers outside elite institutions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>faster or smaller experimental grants;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transparent treasury activity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>international participation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support for unconventional or neglected subjects;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>direct relationships between researchers and funders;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>incentives to publish data, code and negative results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Main_weaknesses\"><\/span>Main weaknesses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also creates substantial risks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>token holders may lack scientific expertise;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wealthy holders may dominate governance;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>popularity can be confused with scientific merit;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>voting can be manipulated through fake identities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>speculative tokens can distract from research;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>legal ownership of IP may be unclear across jurisdictions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>public financial records do not guarantee honest experiments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>researchers still need ethics approval, regulatory compliance and institutional infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strongest design is therefore usually <strong>hybrid<\/strong>: expert review for scientific validity, community participation for priorities, transparent accounting, milestone-based payments, and enforceable legal agreements.
