What matters is that its value is not limited to a private transaction between the platform and an individual customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common good apps frequently support activities such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>producing and sharing public knowledge;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>improving access to education or healthcare;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>funding scientific and technical work;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintaining open digital infrastructure;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>coordinating volunteers and community organizations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increasing government transparency;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monitoring environmental conditions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>helping communities respond to emergencies;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preserving cultural or scientific records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A weather-alert system, for example, may directly notify registered users while also helping emergency services, schools, businesses, and families prepare for dangerous conditions. A common good app, by contrast, may still serve a public-interest purpose even when some of its components are not fully open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open licensing strengthens the common-good character of an app because it allows communities to inspect, reuse, modify, and preserve the technology. However, openness alone does not guarantee social value.
